A nice day for a RIDE - a LONG ride!!

Saturday, April 19 was a beautiful day in San Diego. Temperatures were in the low 80s without a cloud in the sky. Calvin and Tod had planned another excursion in the preparation for the big Triathlon coming on May 9. This was to be the "Killer Bike Ride!"

Calvin had to work late on Friday and again for a few hours on Saturday morning so he didn't arrive at the house to load up bikes, etc until late morning. Tod was still hobbling around a bit after doing the Level 1 Cardio-Burn DVD from the Biggest Loser on Thursday night - found a few muscles that needed a little attention! :) His legs and other parts were just a little tight.

The two of them drove over to Torrey Pines State Beach and then, after a few stretches, began their ride heading north up the 101 right at noon. What a gorgeous day!! Lots of bikers were out. They arrived at the north end of Oceanside around 2:30 - and it was time for a decision. Do they turn around and ride back to the starting point or continue on to the "real" destination - San Clemente - in Orange County. While weighing the pros and cons, another biker approached and told them it was "only 10 miles through Camp Pendleton." That settled it and off they went. The ride through Camp Pendleton is a bit more hilly - plenty of ups and downs but it felt like mostly ups.

It's probably true that it's only 10 miles through Camp Pendleton - BUT that is only half way from Oceanside to San Clemente! They exited Camp Pendleton onto a frontage road and then continued northward. Just to have some proof that they actually went all the way - they took the following picture with one of the signs along the way.
After another 8 miles after exiting Camp Pendleton, the fearsome twosome rode into San Clemente at about 4:00. They wanted to find a place on the beach to rest and recuperate but all the beaches are at the bottom of some very tall cliffs (and downhill walks - which means you have to walk back up!). Then - just like an oasis in the desert - there was a small grassy park right next to the road. After working out a couple of kinks and making sure their rearends weren't permanently damaged - they decided to rest and call for a ride home. It took Kim about an hour to pick up the truck and make the drive so the two of them rested and waited...

Nothing like a little nap in the sun after a long hard ride. And Calvin can sleep just about anywhere

The two went through 3 packets of GU and 3 bottles of Gatorade on their 45-50 mile ride and then enjoyed a powerbar in the park for recovery! And then more napping...
Kim arrived just after 5:00 and rescued the two getting Calvin back to San Diego in time for a dinner dance and more fun. Tod just wanted dinner and collapsed.
