We're Prepared!

One of our new Years Resolution was to get our 72-hour kits (backpacks) ready to go and also to have

a smaller car emergency bag.  Like the one here.  They are filled to the brim with all the good stuff. We thought we might take a little two day camping trip this summer and see how prepared we really are. It s the best way to find out what you forgot to put in your pack! and I'm sure there is plenty.
Now we are working on the years supply.  I'ts kinda nice to go to the "store" in the garage for all my cooking needs.  One evening this week we'll be going to the cannery for more rice and black beans etc.

Actually it is my ultimate goal to be able to eat from  the garage supply and the garden and be happy with what we can come up with.  My gardening skills have a lot to be desired but I am reading a lot and experimenting with new things and methods and always trying something new.  I read in one book that you can grow any kind of lettuce or leafy green and just freeze the extra that you can't eat fast enough for your winter smoothies.  I'm talking green smoothies here -which we enjoy most mornings. It's gross to eat it thawed out but for smoothies it's perfect!

We are thinking of having a party - a food storage potluck party.  Sound fun???  It could be a real kick.  We would use only things from the food storage and the garden.  We'll blog about it when it happens cause you know it will be riduclous and funny.

If you have any great ideas for us for the pantry or the garden -please share!

Kim, This is your "big, gorgeous" son in law (hey you said it not me-look at your comment on buttonbunch blog) writing due to the fact that Berni is currently catatonic from flashbacks of bean flour brownies and her month in food storage "hell" during high school...but I'm sure it wasn't that bad...but probably not a "kick" either. Just know that if you send her an invitation, theres a "small" chance that she'll be there...well, not really.

That is a great goal to have. We made it ours too. Our ward sends out in a newsletter what needs to be in each bag for each member of the family each month. We are already behind because there are so many things to buy and it gets expensive. We will be stretching it over two years now :) So in two years we will be ready! But at least we have tons of rice, beans and wheat.

Don't invite me to that party. I personally know a woman who served jello made from toilet tank water at a ward party just to show everyone how to be resourceful in times of need. Ummm...that's freakin' crazy. I'll probably be willing to eat some nasty stuff when I'm really in need, but why put yourself through that when there's an in-n-out down the road. That's just wrong.

I'll make you invitations out of used toilet paper. And then not eat anything...I am so with beej on this one..when the world has nothing left, i might show up, but i still may only nibble.:)

Used toilet paper Kiki? Lets get graphic about things, sheesh! Who has a year's supply of toilet paper anyway? That is possibly the scariest part of this whole thing... what do we do when the toilet paper runs out???

Wow! Forget about the party, you guys are the real "kick!" I'm can't remember the last time my family had such a rousing discussion over food storage and toilet paper. We better get on that, we're missing out. :o) After hearing stories from both Jared and Brandon in Brazil, I suppose I could reassure Drew that yes, indeed, there is a way to live without toilet paper. Your family was the pro at newspapers right? I suppose you might want to add a daily subscription to the Union-Tribune to your food storage list if you really want to have your bases covered (no pun intended). Oh I love you Comins!

P.S. We were in MM to pick up Scout yesterday on our to Sea Port and we saw you (Tod) coming home. Can't believe you missed an entire car full of Bunkers wildly waving like maniacs...I'm sorry you missed us, we were a real sight. :o) I suppose Avery will have to get her "Tickle Boy" fix another day.
