Hooting for these

So many of you asked for the recipe of the owl cookies that I decided to put the recipe right here on the blog. I think they are pretty cute too and so much fun to make because they turn out with different personalities every time. So here goes!

SPOOKY OWL COOKIES
1 1/2 C butter
2 C Brown Sugar
cream these together
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
add to the above ingredients and beat well
5 C flour
4 tsp. Baking powder
1 tsp. Salt
Mix and add to above mixture

Divide dough into thirds.
Add: 3 squares semi sweet chocolate melted and then mixed with 1/2 tsp. baking soda
to 1/3 of the dough. chill just enough to be able to roll the dough into a log shape (approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter).
Then take the rest of the 2/3 dough and roll it out into an rectangle shape. (sorry that I never measure this I just lay my chocolate log above me and then roll out the dough to match the length and make it wide enough to roll around the chocolate roll -- you can eyeball it all I promise).
Now lay the chocolate log on one edge of the rectangle and roll it up so it fits nicely inside. If it overlaps a little that is ok. Smooth it all out and stick in fridge or freezer for a little bit. Maybe a half hour or more- long enough to get hard enough to cut into cookies.
When nicely chilled take it out and cut with sharp knife into 1/2" slices. Put two slices side by side and squish a little together on greased cookie sheet. Poke the m&m's or chocolate chips in for the eyes and a whole almond or cashew for the beak. You can make a little tweak on the top of each eye to look like owl ears if you want. Experiment with how it looks - obviously I didn't get my chocolate log very round because my dough was so soft but they still look owlish, so don't worry so much about the shape. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. You want these more on the firm side so they don't break apart when you pick one up to eat.
Yum - they are fun for kids to make and fun to give away.
